The Nutcracker, one of the best known ballets by Pyotr Chaikovsky, is especially popular around Christmas time. The fairy tale ballet in two acts, three scenes was composed in 1891-1892 when Alexandre Dumas pere's adaptation of the story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" by E.T.A. Hoffmann was set to music by Tchaikovsky.
