Sergei Fursenko, incoming president of Russian football's governing body, the RFS, began work with a head-to-head meeting with national team coach Guus Hiddink.

The pair met late on Thursday to discuss the Dutchman's future, with Fursenko making it clear that no contract extension would be offered before the current 7 million-euro deal ends in July.

"Guus should work out his contract from the first minute to the last," he told reporters after his election. "If he leaves in the summer it will be our joint decision."

The trainer arrived in Moscow on Wednesday evening, but remained guarded about his long-term plans despite media reports linking him to jobs in Turkey and China, telling reporters to "wait for news".

"I have heard of serious interest from other federations but while I have a contract with Russia I am very pleased to work here, at least until the summer," he told Sovietsky Sport.

Hiddink was regarded as a hero after taking a struggling squad to the semi-finals of Euro 2008, but his relationship with fans cooled after a spell combining his Moscow job with a coaching stint at Chelsea. Failure to qualify for this summer's World Cup provoked more questions about his work.

Ex-president Vitaly Mutko, who appointed the Dutchman in 2006, backed his man on rfs.ru: "When he started we were 36th in the rankings, but climbed to sixth and we are now among the top seeds for the European Championship draw. This is the result of Guus Hiddink."
