1999 At 5 a.m. a block of flats on Kashirskoye highway was bombed by terrorists. As a result the eight storey building was entirely ruined and 124 inhabitants were killed. The blast knocked out windows of neighbouring buildings. Four days before the terrorists had blasted a block of flats on Gurianova street and on the 16th of September - one more in Volgodonsk.

1932 On this day, popular Russian anchorman Igor Kirillov was born in Moscow. His TV career began with victory at the announcers' competition. He was very passionate about his work and soon became the most popular newscaster. Kirillov was announcing official information, was the anchorman of the most important and prominent TV shows in the country such as ‘Vremya' or ‘Novosti'. He was considered to be the face of Channel One and his voice associated with the most important events of the country's life. At the same time he participated in a number of concerts and entertainment shows.

1907 Mikhail Mikhaylovich Gerasimov, Soviet archaeologist and anthropologist, was born in Saint Petersburg this day. Archaeological passion came to him at the age of eleven. At 18 he published his first scientific article.
Gerasimov is well-known thanks to the development of the first forensic sculpture technique based on findings of anthropology, archaeology, paleontology and forensic science. He studied the skulls and reconstructed the faces of over 200 people, including Yaroslav the Wise, Ivan the Terrible and Tamerlane. His method spread all over the world and became instrumental in reconstructions of what the pharaohs, for example, might have looked like. The scientist died on the 21st of July, 1970, having left over 200 reconstructions.

1847 Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky, the founder of today's cosmonautics was born.
His first works dealt with the theories of heavier-than-air flying machines, but then his interests changed. In 1896 he set to writing his major work ‘The Exploration of Cosmic Space by Means of Reaction Devices' that was published in 1903.
He published over 500 works on space travel and related subjects. His works influenced lots of world-known scientists. In 1932 he was awarded ‘The Order of the Red Banner of Labour' for outstanding services in country's defense. The scientist died on the 19th of September, 1935. Paying tribute to Tsiolkovsky ‘the State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics' in Kaluga now bears his name, as well as the crater on the far side of the moon and some educational institutions in Russia.
