Earlier this week, Russian media reported that the Chief of the Russian General Staff, Yuri Baluyevsky, had tendered his resignation following a row with the defense minister over planned reforms in armed forces.

Baluyevsky holds his post from 2004 and his term as Chief of General Staff will only expire in 2011.

Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, a former chief of the national tax service, was appointed to the post in 2007. He  has been expected to bring changes and reforms to the military.
