Fire at the VVTs

RIA Novosti - A large fire raged at the All Russian Exhibition Center (VVTs) in one of its metal hangars Tuesday night. The VVTs  has created its own commission to investigate the cause of the incident, Oleg Gladyshev, head of the information department of the Exhibition Center, told RIA Novosti Wednesday. According to him, the blaze was first reported at 2: 30 a.m. Wednesday, and was under control by 5 a.m.

An area of about 2,000 square meters was damaged.

"In order to ascertain the causes of the fire, we have created the VVTs commission, which began working at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning," the VVTs source said. "The commission is investigating all possible causes of the incident."

He said that the metal hangar which burnt down had been built only two years ago and was equipped with modern fire-fighting measures and relatively new electrical wiring.

"There is no reason to believe that the electrical wiring was worn out or faulty," said Gladyshev."

Gladyshev said that the fire, which started in a metal hangar situated behind the Electrification pavilion, in no way threatened any of the main buildings of the Exhibition Center, still less the Cosmos pavilion which he said some media sources had claimed to be damaged.

The fire did not cause any injuries nor did it destroy any other buildings.

The source was unable to specify the extent of the damage caused by the fire. This will be evaluated by the commission.

Gladyshev is certain, however, that the damage is equal only to the cost of the hangar itself.  "As far as I know, nothing of value was kept in the hangar," he said.
