Documentary Fest

There is good news for documentary film lovers this week, as a documentary, "Kinoteatr.Doc" is taking place in the capital.

Movies will be screened in Aktovii Zal, Teatr.Doc and "Rolan" cinema from February 22 through February 28.

"We have chosen movies that are realistic and show characters and contemporary life truthfully," said Victor Fedoseev, one of the leaders of Kinoteatr Doc.

Kinoteatr.Doc, which is hosting and organizing the event, represents a young generation of Russian directors who work in the documentary genre. The project presents cinema that raises new topics and introduces new faces.

There are 27 movies in the festival, which consists of three parts. As well as the main competition section, there are also opportunities for international and special guest directors to present their work.

There will be a special presentation of the works by Alexander Malinin , whose humanist movies engage with the marginalized and the outcasts of Russian society.

"Malinin tells you about people you would never voluntarily come into contact with, and does this with compassion. He finds humanity in the outcast and presents it with love," said Fedoseev.

The focus of this year's festival is, however, different. "This time the directors tell about themselves and their acquaintances, and city residents about their dreams, affections, delusions and pain," the festival manifesto says.

The international part of the festival will present the best documentaries from Austria, the U.S., Italy, Egypt, France, England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Iran and Serbia.

A retrospective presentation will feature films by the legendary French director Jean Rouche, Dutch director Leonard Helmrich and Polish film-maker Helena Trzheshtikova.

All foreign movies will be presented in the original with subtitles in Russian.

The real highlight of the festival will be a screening of Pavel Kostomarov's film The Mother. Kostomarov has won many awards for his work as a cameraman. Fedoseev said he considers him to be an icon of Russian documentary film-making.
